Course Goal

The goal of this course is to develop an understanding of the concept of the world system and geospace, to grasp their essence from both global and national perspectives, and to cultivate the ability to analyze the interactions and interdependencies among the components of the world system.

Students will learn to determine Ukraine’s physical and geographical position within this system and identify corresponding strategic directions for development. The course also aims to foster the ability to recognize the system-forming role of geospace and to acquire knowledge about time changes on Earth.

Course Information

By studying this course, you will learn about:

  • Key features of the political map and the components of a state’s territory;

  • The distinctions between the terms “country,” “state,” “dependent territory,” and “unrecognized state”;

  • Characteristics of Ukraine’s physical, economic, and political-geographical position, including its borders;

  • Administrative-territorial units and the features of Ukraine’s current administrative structure;

  • Changes in Ukraine’s territorial boundaries during the 20th and 21st centuries;

  • Different types of time, timekeeping systems, and the map of time zones.

You will develop the ability to:

  • Describe Ukraine’s geographical position;

  • Evaluate the political-geographical position of Ukraine and analyze geopolitical events;

  • Analyze Ukraine’s location in relation to time zones and solve problems involving the determination of local and standard time;

  • Identify and locate Ukraine’s land and sea borders, territorial waters, extreme points, and coastline features on a map;

  • Calculate Ukraine’s territorial extent in degrees and kilometers using the coordinate grid;

  • Determine local and standard time, as well as time in various countries and regions of Ukraine.
